The courtroom. Everyone is standing to hear the results.
Has the jury reached a verdict?
Yes, your honor.
THE BAILIFF hands a piece of paper to JUDGE MADISON. JUDGE MADISON unfolds and reads it.
The jury has found the defendant, Conrad Vogel, guilty on all charges.
Jumps to his feet in celebration
Yes! Finally, justice! True, unflinching justice for the victims and their loved ones has finally been served! Thank you, everyone, for making the right choice. Thank you.
CONRAD collapses, his head on the table. His shoulders are shaking as he begins to audibly sob. MAYER pats his shoulder awkwardly.
I’m sorry, Mr. Vogel. I truly did all I could. But you should keep your chin up and go with dignity. Don’t give anyone the satisfaction of breaking you.
CONRAD lifts his head and looks at MAYER, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. He sniffles, but gives a firm nod in agreement. He stands up again. THE BAILIFF approaches and handcuffs CONRAD so his hands are in front of him. He then begins to escort him out.
Oh, Mr. Vogel! One more thing.
CONRAD stops, turning to look at MAYER.
You won’t be in the same place as Dr. Krauss. I’ve made sure of that.
Scoffing
Oh, we’ve all made sure of that. No one wants the two of them together.
Of course. No one wants that. So you have nothing to worry about, Mr. Vogel.
Nodding.
Nothing to worry about… just that no one believes me. Thank you, Mr. Mayer.
CONRAD turns around and is escorted off stage by THE BAILIFF. When the two have fully exited the stage, MAYER sighs in despair and holds his face in his hands.
The lights begin to dim, with the last one held on MAYER.
