HELD: THE TRIAL OF CONRAD VOGEL

a play by callitkismet

ENDING TWO: NOT GUILTY

The courtroom. Everyone is standing to hear the results.

JUDGE MADISON

Has the jury reached a verdict?

BAILIFF

Yes, your honor.

THE BAILIFF hands a piece of paper to JUDGE MADISON. JUDGE MADISON unfolds and reads it.

JUDGE MADISON

The jury has found the defendant, Conrad Vogel, not guilty on the count of murder. The sentence is reduced to accomplice to murder, a ten year sentence with a possibility for parole.

JUDGE MADISON bangs his gavel. ALBRECHT slams his hands on the table in front of him angrily, but otherwise doesn’t react to the sentencing. CONRAD laughs and throws his arms around MAYER, who is clearly startled by this.

MAYER

You heard the part where you’re still going to prison, right?

CONRAD

I know. But I’m just so happy… people believe me! I told them I’m innocent and they believed me! I could go to prison forever and I wouldn’t care, as long as someone out there knew the truth and believed it.

THE BAILIFF approaches with the handcuffs. MAYER weasels his way out of CONRAD’S embrace and pats him on the shoulder.

MAYER

Still, I’m sorry I couldn’t get you a lighter sentence. After everything you’ve been through, you have another ten years to go before you’re finally free.

CONRAD

Holding his hands out to be cuffed

As long as I have my memory, I’ll always be free.

(THE BAILIFF begins to escort CONRAD off the stage. CONRAD stops about halfway across and turns back to MAYER)

Will you visit me while I’m gone, Mayer?

MAYER

Of course, Mr. Vo- Conrad. Of course.

CONRAD smiles at MAYER and then is escorted fully off the stage.
